And her present is all about time -- and everything else that Apple can think of. Vos's birthday gift is the new Apple Watch, which became available for preorder on Friday. She's looking forward to the unique gift, which packs so much information into it.

"It's pretty cool to have something that small," she said Friday after trying on a one of the newest high-tech gadgets from Apple.

Vos was joined by friends Amelia Lin, of Wayland, Mass., and Meghan Dolan, of Closter, N.J. The women are all seniors at Fairfield University. With no Friday classes, they decided to take a shopping trip to Greenwich.

Vos' mother, Lynn, ordered a new watch for her. But the huge demand for the item means that most people will have to wait until June because it sold out within six hours.

"I will wear it every day - I think I will," Vos said with a laugh outside the Greenwich Avenue store.

Vos, Lin and Dolan said the watch will have some limitations.

"You can sort of make a call, quick calls, but not long calls," Vos said. "But it's definitely useful for music and maps."

Apple began taking preorders online at 3:01 a.m., but the demand was so high that the watches are now on back order until June.

Inside the store, consumers were eagerly taking a look at the watches on display. Apple employees carefully placed them on wrists after taking them out of jewelry-like drawers. The watches weren't for sale, but customers could take a look and test out their features.

The watches range in price from $349 for a Watch Sport to an eye-watering $17,000 18-karat gold case for the Apple Watch Edition.

The watch officially goes on sale April 24, but customers can only order it online or at an Apple store terminal. Customers cannot yet pick up a watch at a store, pay for it and go home with the item.
