"It's always the red roses ... that never changes," said Victoria Morrow. "They're a universal symbol for love, everyone gets it. The guys think they're romantic, sexy ... very few go a different way."

The Village Flower Shop serves all of greater Danbury and may look familiar to shoppers from neighboring towns: It is transplanted from an earlier location in New Fairfield.

Valentine’s Day is big business from local stores to national retailers. Americans spent nearly $19 billion last year for Valentine’s Day and could spend close to $20 billion this year, according to fatwallet.com.

During the season, 250 million roses are produced. Many consumers opt for the red roses, which account for 40 percent of purchases, according to the site.

Men typically outspend women two to one on holiday-related purchases. And don’t forget the four-legged members of your family: About 1 in 5 Americans will buy gifts for their pets.

For those looking to buy flowers in the greater Danbury area, the Village Flower Shop is located at 51 Padanaram Road in Danbury. For more information, call 203-746-2471 or visit its website.
