Dr. Thomas Brown, medical director of the facility in Danbury and Doctors Express West Hartford, is a certified civil surgeon. He has worked to ensure that walk-in urgent care needs are met for area immigrants.
Anyone applying for citizenship may now go through Doctors Express to take care of all their health-care needs. In the past, they have had to complete many steps at various locations.
Tom Kelly, managing partner of Doctors Express, explained how this is possible.
“In choosing our locations, we studied the demographics of each area and researched the needs of the population of Danbury, Hartford and surrounding communities,” he said. “Through that process we identified that the health-care elements of immigration can be cumbersome and often overwhelming. In our effort to better serve the entire community, it was important for us to achieve this designation and help streamline this process.”
He added, “Many of our staff members, myself included, are first-generation immigrants. We are particularly sensitive to the magnitude of this process and the effect it has on the lives of immigrants and the generations who follow them.”
Brown said many members of the Doctors Express staff are bi- or tri-lingual. They have been through immigration, so they know the process and paperwork can be overwhelming.
“Our centers purposefully hire staff members who are not only well-equipped to work with the immigrant population, but who also understand the emotional component of naturalization,” Brown stated. “It brings all of us great satisfaction to help educate them and navigate this piece of their journey.”
Kelly said they also give each patient who comes to Doctors Express for an immigration physical is given “a warm welcome and an American flag pin.”
“We like to make a big deal of it,” he explained.
Doctors Express Urgent Care also offers travel medicine services – necessary vaccines and tips for staying healthy when traveling abroad, along with anti-malarial, anti-diarrheal, and anti-motion sickness prescriptions when needed.
