Cos Cob resident Rebecca Karson, a prop stylist turned jeweler, grew up in the borough and said she wanted to bring some of the artisan movement going on in New York closer to home.

Her new store, gather, is a mixture of jewelry, clothing, gifts, vintage home accessories and furniture. All items are handmade. "I've always gravitated to things that were either handmade or vintage," she said. "To me, they always told a more interesting story."

Her objective is to offer residents "an interesting shopping opportunity while supporting the maker movement." The store also offers home styling.

"I always wanted to own a shop but hesitated because I had little kids," Karson said of her new move. "My youngest was getting ready for kindergarten so I went for it."

It helped, too, that she had support in good friend and Riverside resident Lauren Mazzullo, who was also looking for something new. The partners call gather, open since July, their "(ad) venture."

"Neither of us have retail experience," said Karson, "Though we both pride ourselves on being experienced shoppers."  Five weeks after finding the space, the two moms went to work quickly, running from flea market to flea market picking up eclectic pieces and meeting area artisans, all in an effort to "gather" their things, move in, and open.

In the spirit of the holidays they are offering 15 percent off Strung jewelry (Karson's line).

gather is located at 183 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich, 646-361-3672.
