PriceRite Opens Wednesday, Joins Crowded Danbury Market Scene

DANBURY, Conn. -- When the new PriceRite grocery store opens in downtown Danbury on Wednesday, it will feature several green technologies, including glass doors on the dairy cases, energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration throughout the store.

The PriceRite in downtown Danbury will open at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The store will be located at 29 Main St., near the Danbury Historical Society. PriceRite is the renovated site of a former A&P that closed in March 2012. It is the 11th PriceRite location in Connecticut.

“Expanding our service in Connecticut with a new store in Danbury is a natural next step in our commitment to providing our customers with a great shopping experience,” Neil Duffy, president of PriceRite, said in a statement. “At PriceRite, it is our philosophy that our customers shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality to save on price.”

The 45,000-square-foot building has been renovated, the sign retrofitted and the parking lot newly paved in anticipation of the grand opening, on Wednesday at 8 a.m. PriceRite has completed about $5 million worth of renovations, including drainage work and exterior upgrades on the building.

It will also join a crowded shopping area: a new Whole Foods opened last Friday about 3 miles away in the Shops At Marcus Dairy near the mall.

PriceRite encourages customers to use their own bags or to buy them as needed for 10 cents each to keep costs down. It does not advertise nor does it publish a weekly ad circular.

More than 100 full- and part-time workers are being hired, officials said.

It will sell fresh produce; packaged meats; baked goods; a variety of private label and national grocery brands; and dairy and frozen food products. Its prices are 30 percent to 50 percent lower than name brand prices.

“It represents a significant investment on Main Street,” Mayor Mark Boughton said at the announcement of the opening of the store. “It provides a much needed service on that end of town and creates a regional drive.”

The building has been a grocery store for the past 40 to 50 years and it was important for the city of Danbury to keep it that way, he said, citing the hundreds of seniors, disabled residents and others who live in five nearby apartment buildings who need a grocery story within walking distance.

PriceRite is a sister banner to ShopRite under Wakefern Food Corp., a cooperative based in Keasbey, N.J.
