CityCenter Preps For Taste Of Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. – Organizers of Danbury’s annual food and music celebration, the Taste of Greater Danbury, are putting the final touches on the two-day event, which is scheduled for this weekend on the Green in Danbury CityCenter.

This year’s celebration marks its 26th year, and organizer Pat Hembrook said it will feature more food vendors than in previous years. The event drew more than 20,000 people last year, and Hembrook said she anticipates a similar turnout this year.

“We’re up to 20 food vendors, or as we like to say we’re filled to the gills,” she said. “In my first year with Taste of Danbury seven years ago, we had three food vendors so we’re continuing to grow.”

Hembrook said she is proud of the diversity of the food offerings, which will feature Thai, Peruvian, Hispanic, Italian, Indian and a host of other cuisines from around the world.

Additionally, the festival also will feature food demonstrations on a second smaller stage on Ives Street that also will host dance demonstrations and hair-styling demonstrations by the Paul Mitchell School.

“We try very hard not to feature competing food vendors,” she said, adding that organizers turned down some vendors who requested space at the event. “We like diversity. If you have too many vendors serving the same cuisine it doesn’t do anybody any good.”

Besides the food vendors, the event also will feature 65 booths helmed by area civic groups and nonprofits.

The highlight of the free two-day festival will be two performances by former Journey lead singer Steve Augeri, who performed with the iconic ‘80s band for nearly a decade after the departure of Steve Perry.

Augeri and his band will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“Steve will be performing from the whole Journey songbook,” Hembrook said.

Taste of Greater Danbury will run from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.
