DANBURY, Conn. — Through their senior project, three Danbury High girls are making it possible for teens who are less fortunate to go to the prom.
The girls — Sarina Gersten, 18, Lexi Lucas, 18, and Alasandra Primavera, 17 — created a boutique and scholarship program for teens who receive help at Family & Children's Aid in Danbury.
They have organized a donation drive where people can drop off formal dresses for the boutique, which is located inside Family & Children's Aid.
Teens will then get to select a dress at the boutique. And not just for the prom— they get to keep it.
The teens will also be eligible to apply for a scholarship the Danbury seniors have organized.
The event, called "Build a Boutique While You Network and Meet" will be held March 23 at 5:15 p.m. at Family & Children Aid, 75 West St., Danbury.
Those who attend the event can also make a $20 donation toward the scholarship fund.
"This is a networking event for local businesspeople in the area to meet and mingle while they help teens in need," Sarina said.
“The girls are creating a sustainable boutique where people can keep donating year after year," said Susan Schullery, the girls' peer leadership teacher. The project is an assignment in her class.
Sarina said that to her, the project is a way to pay it forward. “I’m very fortunate for all the opportunities that my parents have been able to give me.
"I want these girls to have a Cinderella moment where they can feel pampered."
Alasandra said, “I've seen firsthand how people struggle. There are a lot of teenagers in this school who can’t even afford to buy lunch every day. I feel that giving them this opportunity would be extraordinary."
To spread the word about the scholarship and boutique, the girls posted on social media and reached out to friends, family and local businesses.
“We went to banks, restaurants and stores in the mall, asking for contributions," Sarina said.
They also set up a fundraising page , which has raised almost $400 toward the scholarship. “Our goal is to reach $1,000,” Sarina said.
They have also collected 20 dresses and an assortment of prom accessories.
