Samantha Feliciano of Stratford, Sergio Mandujano of Norwalk, and Edwin Rodriguez of New Haven, make up a trio of jazz singers acting as the “Greek chorus” commenting on the one-act opera’s unfolding story.
The leading roles will be performed by WCSU students Kassiani Kontothanasis, of Meriden, and Steve Valenzuela, of Waterbury.
Professor of Music Dr. Margaret Astrup will direct the production.
Curtains open at 8 p.m. in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall at the Visual and Performing Arts Center.
The center is located on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension, Danbury.
‘Tahiti,’ which premiered in 1952 at Bernstein’s Festival of the Creative Arts in Massachusetts, was later presented in 1958 at the New York City Opera. It set in middle-class American suburbia after World War II, is part of Bernstein’s musical legacy that includes “On the Town” and “West Side Story.”
The opera’s libretto in English, written in the American vernacular of the early 1950s, tells the story of a day in the life of a troubled young married couple, Sam and Dinah, against the backdrop of discontent and disenchantment in suburbia.
