Back-to-Back I-95 Crashes Hurt 5 in Norwalk

NORWALK, Conn. — Firefighters extricated five people from four separate crashes that took place within about three hours on I-95 in Norwalk on Saturday morning.

Seven people were sent to the hospital, including one person who had life-threatening injuries, said Deputy Chief Edward Prescott of the Norwalk Fire Department

The accidents occurred between 1:50 and 5:15 a.m., within a 1-mile stretch of the northbound lanes of the freeway, between the Yankee Doodle Bridge and the Westport border. Interstate 95 was shut down several times throughout the morning for crash investigations.

In the first crash, near the Westport border, a car was pinned facing the wrong way between a tractor-trailer and the center guardrail. Another car hit the back of the tractor-trailer and wound up in the breakdown lane. Both drivers had to be extricated form their cars and were taken to Norwalk Hospital.

Sometime later, an SUV rear-ended a dump truck near the East Avenue entrance ramp. It took Norwalk and Westport firefighters 30 minutes to extricate the driver, who was pinned under the dashboard. The driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In the next crash, a car spun out into the center barrier on the Yankee Doodle Bridge and was hit by two other cars. The female driver and a male passenger were knocked into the back seat when their car spun out. They were taken to the hospital along with two young male passengers from another car.

The final crash took place on the bridge while the highway was closed and cars were being diverted at Exit 16. A driver rammed the back of another car, knocking it into the back of a tractor-trailer as cars were merging to get off the freeway. A female driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and a 5-quart oil spill was prevented from leaking into the Norwalk River below.

Police did not release the names of any of the victims.
