STAMFORD, Conn. Andy and Jeannette Maceluch have moved their boat to Norwalk for the winter, although they do not want to leave their hometown of Stamford to get to the vessel next spring.
The two were among the many boaters who rallied at Save Our Boatyard in Kosciuszko Park on Sunday afternoon.
Its our summer home on the water, Jeannette Maceluch said of the boat.
The couple had to move their boat out of the city for the winter because on Nov. 1, Building and Land Technology is closing Brewers Yacht Haven for an environmental cleanup. The Maceluchs said the redevelopment in the Harbor Point area has benefitted Stamford. But they do not want to see the developer permanently close the boatyard, which is the only place to store and maintain a boat indoors in Stamford.
I hope these guys dont pull it out from below us, Andy Maceluch. He and his wife have kept their boats at Brewers since they bought their first vessel about 30 years ago.
The boaters main complaint is that Building and Land Technology has yet to announce its plans for the site after the cleanup. The citys zoning board said in 2007 that a boatyard needs to be where Brewers is located.
I feel its David vs. Goliath, Maureen Boylan, one of the members of Save Our Boatyard, said to the crowd. She also assured them that the boatyard's supporters are in for the long haul - even if it means taking the case to Washington, D.C., to keep a working boatyard in Stamford.
