Alexander Chianurashvili told police he bought a kit online for $75 that allowed him to duck E-ZPass tolls at least a dozen times, Al Della Fave of the Port Authority Police Department told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
At the press of a button, the device drops the rear plate up so that it can’t be read electronically. It can then be flipped back up once the rider is past the E-ZPass reader.
PAPD Officer Christopher Terranova (see video, below) stopped the 2003 Kawasaki as it approached the bridge toll at 5:45 tonight.
Chianurashvili, who is from Rehovot, Israel, spent three years in the Israeli Air Force and attended New York University, where he wrestled and now is an assistant coach for the team.
He lists his occupation as a technical consultant for a financial data company.
“I have been active in athletics from the age of 9. Started off with Kyokushin and Greco Roman, at the age of 14,” Chianurahvili writes on his web site. “Picked up Sambo and Judo, competed internationally and after moving to the US at the age of 22, Wrestled in college, trained and competed in Boxing, BJJ and MMA. Have 3 professional fights and 4 amateur fights, undefeated MMA record.”
He also wrestled in the Pan-Am games.
From 2001-04, he says, “I was in charge of training an entire base full of combat soldiers in self defense and combat conditioning.”
Chianurahvili says he now gives martial arts lessons at his home.
Chianurashvili, who was carrying $308 in cash, was charged with theft of services and possession of burglar tools — the implements he admitted using to install the device, Della Fave said.
