Somerset County Dad Seriously Hurt In 3-Car Crash Gets Outpour Of Support

A Somerset County dad who loved ones say has an “unselfish and caring spirit” is getting an outpour of community support after a serious three-car crash left him with major injuries.

Colin Coakley stands up for the first time, nearly six weeks after a 3-car crash left him in the ICU with serious injuries on Monday, June 19.

The crash occurred on Hamilton Street in Franklin Township on Monday, June 19 and claimed the life of 23-year-old track star Mario Heslop, who authorities say crossed the centerline, prompting a chain-reaction crash between two other vehicles.

The driver of the second vehicle, Colin Coakley, of Hillsborough, spent time in the ICU before he was released to continue his recovery at home, according to a GoFundMe launched by his spouse, Joyce Coakley.

“He will have many hurdles to face and overcome in the months ahead,” reads the campaign, created Tuesday, July 11.

“His journey will be long. His journey will be tough. But we know that he will recover in time.”

As the business manager for Rutgers Institute for Health, Colin manages grant proposals and helps secure funding for its researchers — just one piece of evidence toward his selflessness:

“For those of you who know Colin, he has an unselfish and caring spirit,” reads the campaign. “He amazes me at how he always thinks of others before himself…Though difficult, his positive outlook and ever so grateful attitude are pulling him through.”

The community has raised more than $21,300 for Colin following the accident, pushing the campaign to more than 80 percent of its goal. The funds will be used for day-to-day expenses and other financial challenges during his recovery process.

As of Thursday, July 27, Colin had stood up for the first time and was “drawing strength” from each of the fundraiser’s supporters — more than 200 of them.

“Colin is fighting so hard,” Joyce Coakley writes.

“Good things are coming…We can’t thank you enough for all your continued support, love, and generosity.”
