Mayor Invites Danbury Residents To Celebrate National Day Of Prayer

DANBURY, Conn. - In recognition of the annual National Day of Prayer, Mayor Mark Boughton invites residents and all faith leaders to join him for a celebration Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at City Hall.

Individuals of all creeds and denominations are encouraged to join the faithful of Danbury for prayer.

“The annual National Day of Prayer brings together the faithful of America to pray for our nation and its leadership, church, education, family, government and media," Boughton said. "I welcome individuals of all religions to join us for prayer.”

The National Day of Prayer gathers Americans of all religions and faiths to foster unity for America. Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for such a day. Officially, the National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and was signed into law by President Harry Truman. President Ronald Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
