Pitch In, Go 'Green' With Earth Day Events Throughout Fairfield County

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- You don't have to wait until Earth Day Friday, April 22, to honor the earth. Not sure where you're needed? The following activities should help get you started. Feel free to write to us with more events.

Thursday, April 21

  • Get ready to "Eat, Drink & Learn" at The New Canaan Nature Center where the session concentrates on "Rosé, Reptiles & Amphibians." Starts at 6:30 p.m. Go HERE for tickets.
  • The Kennedy Center’s Maggie Daly Arts Coop and the Bijou Theatre are hosting the Bridgeport EarthFest, bringing together the community to learn, experience and celebrate Earth Day through the arts. Events kick off at 10 a.m. at the MDAC studio, then move to the McLevy Green at noon and wrap-up at 4 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre. Go HERE for details.

Friday, April 22

  • The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield (258 Main St.) is hosting a special Earth Day arts project from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. using a palette of found and recyclable materials to create an “up-cycled” object for use in your home. Details: www.aldrichart.org/.

  • Green & Tonic (7 Strickland Rd.) in Cos Cob is sponsoring a kid-friendly Earth Day event in cooperation with the Garden Education Center from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a garden activity for the kids as well as healthy snacks and smoothies for adults. RSVP at pr@greenandtonic.com.

  • Enjoy a weekday walk from 10 a.m. to noon at Earthplace (10 Woodside Lane) in Westport and let naturalists and local experts lead you through the natural wonders this area gem provides. Each week, guided walks focus on a different natural phenomenon. Details: www.earthplace.org.

  • The Woodcock Nature Center (56 Deer Run Road, Wilton) will lead a walk from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to look for signs of spring’s arrival, including frog eggs and salamanders. Saturday, April 23

  • St. Paul's on the Green (60 East Ave.) in Norwalk honors Earth Day with outdoor activities including an exercise workshop for all ages, a sing-along, and tours of the grounds and church. Festivities start at 11 a.m. Details: www.stpaulsnorwalk.org/.
  • Explore nature's wonders at Grace Farms (365 Lukes Wood Rd.) in New Canaan from 1 to 3 p.m. Details: www.newcanaannature.org/.

Saturday, April 30

  • The Fairfield Earth Day Celebration, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., hosts its annual extravaganza at Fairfield Warde High School (755 Melville Ave). The free event is an impressive showcase of local residents, businesses, schools, and organizations promoting green initiatives. Sunday, May 1

  • Involve the family an Earth Day Family Volunteer Project at Stamford Museum & Nature Center (39 Scofieldtown Rd.) around the theme "Invasive Plant Species Removal" That means joining together from 9:30 a.m. to noon for a “garlic mustard pull,” removing it from trails and woods. The garlic mustard leaves that are harvested will be offered to local food banks to help feed the hungry. Kids must be 11 and older and accompanied by an adult.
