Stamford Downtown Readies Rappellers For Sunday Stunt, Tree Lighting

STAMFORD, Conn. -- About 220 feet above the cold, hard Stamford cement, a crew of workers in harnesses, fire officials, media personalities and baseball icons rehearsed a daredevil stunt on Friday, Dec. 5, all in the name of a traditional holiday event.

Fox 5 Sports anchor Duke Castiglione hangs over the edge of Stamford's Landmark Square building, 22 stories above the street, during Friday's rehearsal for Heights & Lights.

For those who are unfamiliar with Stamford’s Heights & Lights event, four notables will rappel down the side of 1 Landmark Square, one of the city’s largest buildings, during the city's annual holiday tree lighting.

On Sunday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m., New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, Former New York Mets and Boston Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine, Fox News Channel’s meteorologist Rick Reichmuth and Fox 5 Sports anchor Duke Castiglione, along with Santa Claus, will make the descent down 22 stories to add to the suspense of Stamford’s holiday tree lighting.

During the early morning hours Friday, strong winds had rappellers spinning and at times inverted as they made their descent along the side of the downtown building. Spotters at the bottom helped coach the guest repellers down, guiding them to safety.

The difficulty of getting down the building during the light of day may play a factor into Sunday’s night descent, officials said. However, it would be hard to imagine anyone to have a tougher time than the Rappelling Santa, who will have to make it down to the street in full holiday gear.

The Stamford Downtown Special Services District organizes the annual event. The spectacular activities begin with the rappelling event at 5 p.m. at Landmark Square, complete with spotlights, holiday music and fireworks.

The festivities will then turn up Bedford Street to nearby Latham Park, with the countdown and lighting of the Christmas tree. The evening of holiday fun will also feature live music from the Swingset Mamas and the cast of "Peter Pan Jr." from Saxe Middle School.
