Students At Wcsu Perform Tribute To Danbury Hero

DANBURY, Conn. – Students at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury will perform a tribute on Wednesday, Feb. 11, to the first African American woman to sing at the Metropolitan Opera.

Marian Anderson was rejected by the Daughters of the American Revolution when she wanted to perform in 1939 at Constitution Hall. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a letter three years later and the Daughters of the American Revolution decided to let Anderson sing.

WCSU students will perform a tribute to Anderson, who lived in Danbury, in recognition of Black History Month. The tribute will take place at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall on the West Side campus at 43 Lake Ave.

Residents are invited to attend the free event.

Professor of Music Margaret Astrup said, “The students are very honored to do this. I think they recognize the significance of this. Students are very aware of social inequalities, whether it’s race or gender or economic. This is one way they can pay tribute to someone who made a difference in breaking down the barriers of classical music.”
