This year’s theme is “Every Hero has a Story” and will feature programs promoting superheroes and everyday heroes, according to a press release. The program will be conducted for seven weeks. For more than 20 years, the Danbury Library has been offering a summer program to encourage children and teens to read during the summer months to help them maintain their current reading levels.
Continued reading during the summer months has been seen as a vital ingredient in student success in the new school year, according to a press release. The library encourages students to read books of their choice by providing colorful displays of suggested books by grade, offering weekly incentives and prizes for reading and a variety of fun and educational programs, according to a press release.
Through the “Super Power Readers Club,” kids will set their own weekly reading goals by the number of hours they read. The time and the titles of the books they read are recorded on their reading log and they bring the log in each week to have their time recorded by a teen volunteer and to receive small prizes.
While supplies last, each child who is eligible and registers for the club, will receive a free book, courtesy of Macy’s and Reading is Fundamental, according to a press release.
To help start things off, there will be a "Superhero Party" with The Bossy Frog Band from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday under a large tent on the library’s plaza. Children will be able to sign up for the reading program, play games and listen to the music of The Bossy Frog Band.
