WestConn Celebrates Women’s History Month

DANBURY, Conn. – Western Connecticut State University has announced several events that will be held in March to celebrate Women’s History Month. The events focus on women’s contributions to literature, film, history and the community, according to a university news release.

All events will be held on WestConn’s Midtown campus at 181 White St., Danbury, and are free and open to the public. Artifacts from WestConn’s archives will also be on display on the first floor of Haas Library.

Here’s the schedule of events:

“Women and Revolutionary Rhetoric,” March 5, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room 508 Haas Library. Professor Jeanne Lakatos will discuss the significance of women who have influenced various national revolutions from the late 18th century to the present through their use of language and rhetoric. Tea will be served.

“Women’s Suffrage Centennial,” March 6, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., first floor Haas Library. A three-member student panel will discuss the role and relationship between women and societal institutions within the larger context of social movements, policy change and collective memory.

Live music at the Coffeehouse, March 7, at 8 p.m., Alumni Hall. Marci Geller, who has appeared on “Good Day NY” and other morning news programs, will perform Indie/folk music.

Career Services Workshop: “Interviewing Skills for Women,” March 13, 12:15 to 2 p.m., Room 201, Student Center. This workshop will provide advice for women entering the job market. Topics will include: negotiating salaries, appropriate attire, presentation and resumes. Lunch is provided.

“Story Slam” March 14, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Room 201, Student Center. WCSU students will share stories that celebrate noble women in history. Winners will compete in the Connecticut Storytelling Festival in April.

Screening of “Die Verlorene Ehre der Katarina Blum,” March 15, from 7 to 10 p.m., White Hall, Viewing Room 1. This German film, “The Lost Honor of Katarina Blum” offers a ground-breaking look at women’s issues.

Danbury Women’s “Mentor of the Year” award,  March 21, at 7:30 p.m., Student Center Theatre. This year’s honoree is Lou Ann Bloomer of TBICO.
