DANBURY, Conn. – Fans of rock and roll and musicals will get a chance to see both combined in the story of 19th-century German teens finding their place in the world when Western Connecticut State University hosts "Spring Awakening," starting Wednesday.

The musical opens Wednesday, Feb. 27, with a gala after the first performance. There will also be performances Feb. 28 and March, 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16. The Feb. 27 and 28 performances are at 7 p.m., and the remaining performances are at 8 p.m. There will also be 2 p.m. matinee shows March 9, 10 and 16.

The musical, based on the work of German dramatist Frank Wedekind with lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, opened on Broadway in 2006 and has won eight Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards.

WestConn’s version will be directed by Sal Trapani, chairman of the theater arts department, who said his approach was to “let the issues in the play speak for themselves.”

The performances will be held in the Berkshire Theater on WestConn’s Midtown campus at 181 White St. Tickets are $25 for the public, $15 for seniors and non-WestConn students, and free for WestConn students. The play is open to the public but not recommended for children because of the controversial subject matter.
