Bethel's Sycamore Drive-In Pleases With Old-Time Vibe, Original Recipes

BETHEL, Conn. -- A 1950s vibe and good old-fashioned food make the Sycamore Drive-In Restaurant -- one of the last drive-in diners in the state -- a Bethel institution that has been attracting folks from across Fairfield County for years.

The restaurant has been in business since 1948 and is known for its homemade root beer and steakburgers.

Patrick Austin has been the owner for the past 19 years, said the burgers are made fresh.

"We use top sirloin, and there's nothing like it." Austin said. "We use the same recipe from the original owners in 1948."

Just as popular: the "curbside" service, popular in warm weather, and the '50s memorabilia that lines the walls of the eatery. There's even some very cool, very old gas pumps that are a topic of conversation and the backdrop of many selfies.

"People like it, it's like a time warp," said Austin. "No one can believe we're still here. But we're happy to be here, and be part of the community."

Sycamore Drive-In Restaurant is at 282 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, 203-748-2716, www.sycamoredrivein.com/.
