The Farmers Market will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every Friday at Kennedy Park at Elm and Main streets in downtown Danbury from June 28 to Oct. 25.

CityCenter Danbury Farmers Market is promoting the idea of "Better Health Through Better Food" and encouraging patrons who might not otherwise buy fresh produce to do so, it says on its website.

"Better Health through Better Food is, at its core, a health and nutrition enhancement campaign, sustainable agriculture initiative, and an economic development strategy," the Danbury Farmers Market Community Collaborative says on the website.

At the Danbury market, young mothers with infants, families and senior citizens who are eligible for state and federal nutrition programs can increase the value of their benefits.

The collaborative will accept various forms of payment. It doubles the value of Senior and Women, Infant & Children Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Vouchers (FMNP) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Up to $6 each market day is matched, and SNAP recipients are also able to use their EBT cards for any additional amount. In addition, for those not receiving government food assistance, market vouchers are available through community health centers.

"In 2009, community leaders came together to both enable those, now excluded by limited resources, to purchase fresh local food at the Danbury Farmers Market and to enhance the market experience for all, to increase the quantity of fresh, healthy food purchased and consumed in the community," the collaborative says. "A healthier community is the goal. This is a true nutrition in action program, providing the resources to make health promoting recommendations, actionable."
