The event raises money for community and educational initiatives that target at-risk youth and is named in honor of Marcus Dixon McInerney, a Stamford High School graduate and football star who, organizers said, overcame many life challenges and went on to attend West Point. His life was cut tragically short at age 22 three years ago when he accidentally shot himself while showing a gun to friends.

It is being coordinated by the Stamford Public Education Foundation and MarcUS for Change. Working together, the foundations have raised over $120,000.

Malloy said that he and his wife were “honored to be co-chairing this event to support SPEF and MarcUS for Change,” adding that the groups help students get “the assistance they need to be successful in their academic and professional endeavors.”

The park is at 1010 Washington Blvd., Stamford, Conn.

Participants can register online at www.MarcUSforChange5K.racewire.com.

The pre-registration fee is $25. All participants receive a free T-shirt commemorating the day.

The Stamford school with the most affiliated participants will win the Spirit Award and receive $1,000 as well as an additional $200 that can be donated to their organization of choice, organizers said.
