This academy consists of two weeks of physical training, training in drill, academics in the classroom and sailing training.
At the end of the two weeks, the cadets compete in a sailing regatta where they sail small boats on their own and as a team of four cadets.
The ver competitive selection for this academy is based on a cadet's overall performance and leadership qualities in their school's unit.
The NJROTC unit has been designated a "Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors" for the past 10 years. The unit is under the direction of Lt. Cmdr. Mark Dwinells Sr. and Master Sgt. Joseph Meehan, both of whom are Naval Science instructors.
NJROTC is a youth education program sponsored by the Navy whose purpose is to bring out the best in every student. It is available for students in grades 9 through 12 at Bethel High. Only a select few schools have such a program.
The mission of the unit is to prepare youth for the challenges of the future by teaching them teamwork and follower-ship, as well as the leadership and management skills needed for success.
