Boughton and the City Council passed a measure making the first Tuesday in December Hat City Day. As part of the celebration, the mayor invited all Danbury residents to wear a hat on Tuesday and email photos to the Danbury musuem and use the hashtag #Hatcityday.

Boughton also asked educators to discuss the historical significance of the hatting industry in Danbury.

As Boughton said in a statement, Danbury was once known as the hat capitol of the world due to its abundance of water and fur. By the late 1800s, manufacturers in the city were producing 5 million hats per year at a time when a good hat was a staple in every man's wardrobe.

Though the hatting industry has left Danbury, Boughton said its impact will last forever.

To cap off the inaugural Hat City Day, the mayor held a ceremony at City Hall at 7 p.m.

And to show his Civic Pride, Boughton donned a hat of his own and posted to his Twitter account.
