In order to earn the Gold Award, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts between the grades of 9 to 12 spend at least 80 hours researching issues, assessing community needs and resources, building a team and making a sustainable impact in the community. A Gold Award recipient’s accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart as a community leader.
For her project, Murphy expanded the children’s garden at Danbury's Tarrywile Park by installing educational signs and creating a nature scavenger hunt. She also researched, wrote and installed a history board about the park's past as a dairy farm. The signs were made of sustainable materials and all files of her work were sent to the dairy farm administration for future use.
Murphy is a 2012 graduate of Danbury High School and now attends the University of Connecticut, where she studies nursing.
She was honored this month in a statewide ceremony at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford and in a local ceremony in Danbury with other local Girl Scouts.
She credited Tarrywile Executive Director Sandy Moy, who died earlier this year, and her Girl Scout mentor, Jean Walker, for her success on the project.
National standards for earning the Gold Award are set by Girl Scouts of the USA.
This year, 70 young women from around the state earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, an unprecedented number and the most recipients in Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s history.
