DANBURY, Conn. -- Natalie Weise, a former regent of the Mary Wooster Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Danbury, recently had the opportunity to acquire a special document signed by chapter namesake Mary Wooster herself.

Natalie Weise, a Danbury Museum & Historical Society board member, has donated a historic document to the museum's archives.

The note of payment, dated Nov. 22, 1785, also bears the signature of Connecticut State Treasurer John Lawrence and requests that the sum of 50 pounds be paid to Mary Wooster, wife of Revolutionary War General David Wooster.

The signature of patriot Oliver Wolcott, a signer of the Declaration of Independence who served as the 19th  governor of the state of Connecticut, is also present.

Weise, a board member of the Danbury Museum & Historical Society, decided that this historic document should be part of the museum's collection

“I chose to donate it to the museum's archival collection so this piece of local history has a permanent and appropriate home,” said Weise.

A reproduction of the document will also be hung in the D.A.R. Room in the museum's 1785 Rider House, the crown jewel of the museum and a historic home that the Mary Wooster Chapter had a hand in saving from the wrecking ball in 1947.

“We're thrilled to add this piece of history to the archive,” said museum Executive Director Brigid Guertin. “The Wooster name is a prominent one locally. General David Wooster died in our city and is laid to rest here as well.  We are grateful to Natalie Weise for considering us a suitable steward of this document.”

The Mary Wooster Chapter of the DAR meets monthly at the museum. Their next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m.  If you have any questions about becoming a member of the Mary Wooster Chapter, email marywoosterdarct@gmail.com.
