Is Fido On A 'Leach?' New Signs Draw Ire, Giggles From Bridgeport Residents

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Mistake-laden signs about new rules at a pocket beach and a park in Black Rock have residents up in arms — and dog owners wondering just where they can find a “6’ leach” to walk their pooches.

“I’d pay good money to see a dog on a six-foot leach,” one resident posted on Black Rock Community Updates, a popular Facebook spot for a lively mix of helpful tips, public shaming and group chuckles.

The signs, which were posted this week at tiny Seabright Beach, offer a laundry list of rules banning everything from alcoholic beverages and unattended kayaks to ATVs, buses and “organized music or public speaking.”

They’ve provoked dozens of angry and hilarious social media comments — mostly for the unfortunate misspellings and rules that would seem better suited for a larger space.

“PARK OPENS AT 8:00 AM PARKS (sic) CLOSES AT 8:00 PM,” reads one line.

“Dogs are required to be on a 6’ leach (sic),” reads another.

If that weren’t confusing enough, another line reads “No dogs permitted on beach.”

And one sign is posted directly over a Mutt Mitt dog waste bag dispenser, suggesting Max and Muffy are perfectly welcome to, er, do their business in the area.

“No rules about other animals! I can still bring my Bengal!” wrote another jokester who posted a photo of his cat traipsing along the sand.

A half-block away at Ellsworth Park a new sign offers similar regulations, but calls the space “Ellsworth Beach.” The park does border a tidal cove, but there is no beach in sight and it’s best known for its baseball fields, tennis courts and playground.

Some residents blamed the new signs on “complainers” who live nearby and want the Seabright Avenue space treated like a private beach. City officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Many longtime Black Rockers said they would just ignore the new signs.

“My husband and I got engaged on our little beach, where years of memories with our German Shepherd (that had just passed on) were made,” said one. “They can put all the signs up they want, it won't keep me away. We should now use it even more!”
