A Winter Storm Warning continues until 6 a.m. Wednesday across all of Fairfield County, the National Weather Service said.
The snow could be heavy at times, with the heaviest snowfall into Tuesday evening, the weather service said. The storm will reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less at times, with falling, blowing and drifting snow causing hazardous driving and walking conditions, especially during the evening commute.
Snowfall accumulations will range from 4 to 8 inches for inland Fairfield County to as much as 6 to 12 inches along the coast with blustery conditions as winds gust to 15 to 20 mph.
Snow will continue with widespread blowing and an overnight low of about 6 degrees and a wind chill value as low as -13.
The storm should come to an end before 9 a.m. Wednesday under mostly cloudy skies and a high near 15 and wind chills as low as -12. Temperatures plunge even lower Wednesday, with a low of zero or -1.
Thursday should be partly sunny, with a high near 17.
The bitter cold and low wind chills could cause frostbite or hypothermia. Residents are urged to dress appropriately, with hats and gloves covering exposed skin, as they dig out from the storm.
