SHELTON, Conn. — There’s still plenty of time to settle on a Halloween costume, but Jones Family Farms is kicking off the harvest season by officially opening its pumpkin patches Thursday.

The pumpkin fields will be open for business on aptly named Pumpkinseed Hill, 120 Beardsley Road, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily through Oct. 31.

“The pumpkin crop is looking very nice!” said Tom Harbinson, Jones’ facilities and infrastructure manager. “We again will have a diverse variety of heirloom squash, gourds and pumpkins — all grown here on our farm.”

Many winter squash can be stored for several months and the farm also offers fall flowers, Indian corn, hayrides and a weekends-only corn maze.

As in years past, the farm has a seasonal theme, this time “America The Beautiful.” Farm workers have added scenery and interactive displays inspired by the poem by Katharine Lee Bates.

The farm also offers education stations throughout the yard explaining the pumpkin growing season, the pollinators that interact with the crop and other aspects of agriculture practices at Jones.

Feeling a little parched after picking? Head on over to Jones’ winery tasting room at the Homestead Farm at 606 Walnut Tree Hill Road. The winery is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

You can always get up-to-date condition reports on the Crop Report at 203-929-8425 and check on farm events at www.jonesfamilyfarms.com .
