They were among nearly 550 volunteers from 27 local businesses and corporations who demonstrated their volunteering skills and community support by participating in the United Way of Western Connecticut’s Annual Day of Action. Over 40 projects were completed throughout the greater Danbury and greater New Milford areas to benefit more than 30 nonprofit agencies.
By 9:30 a.m., work had begun on several outdoor projects, including cleaning, pruning and marking on trails, planting flowers in planters, painting picnic tables and posts, and gardening work. The ponds on the property were also cleaned. Tarrywile supplied the flowers and tools that were needed.
"The employees of Praxair are proud to give back to the community by participating in the United Way Day of Action," said Melissa Andros, an employee at Praxair.
The weather luckily held out under partly cloudy skies for the volunteers as they broke up into groups all over the property.
“Giving back is good,” said Tom West, an employee of Duracell.
Tarrywile was grateful to work with United Way and the corporate volunteers.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do this without volunteers, and the place looks great because of them,” Becky Petro, director of Tarrywile Park & Mansion, said of the work needed to keep up with the property.
Tarrywile was built in 1896 for Dr. William C. Wile, Danbury’s first medical examiner and principal benefactor of Danbury Hospital. Now, it is a beloved urban park encompassing 722 acres near downtown Danbury.
