DANBURY, Conn. – A female teacher at Danbury High School charged with having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student has been fired, according to the News-Times .

Kayla Mooney, 24, was fired because she failed to maintain her certification, the News-Times said. Kim Thompson, director of human resources and legal counsel to the Board of Education, confirmed the news Tuesday with the News-Times.

Mooney, who was a first-year science teacher at Danbury High, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree sexual assault and providing alcohol to a minor. But her lawyer said he had not received evidence requested from the prosecutor and asked for a delay.

Mooney, who did not enter a plea, was placed on leave on Feb. 10 and arrested on March 31.

Mooney is now due to be arraigned May 27 and faces 10 years in prison if convicted.
