The driver of a tractor-trailer who was delivering newspaper circulars said he hit a patch of ice at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday as he traveled down Wilson Street, which is a steep hill. Freezing rain had fallen overnight, and snow was beginning to fall at the time.
The tractor-trailer fish-tailed into the wrong lane, the driver said. He tried to turn at the bottom of the hill, but the tractor-trailer continued to go straight downhill and slammed into the home at 7 Grand St. at the foot of Wilson St.
Police gave the driver, a man from Pennsylvania, a verbal warning for driving too fast for the conditions, according to the News Times. The truck was from Shawnee Transportation in Pennsylvania.
No one inside the home was hurt. The homeowner said she awoke when she heard a bang and felt the house shake.
Police officers blocked Wilson, Grand and South streets as firefighters and a city building official inspected the damage to the house.
By about 8:30 a.m., a wrecker had arrived and pulled the tractor-trailer away from the house and then towed it from the scene. The scene drew a small crowd of neighbors who watched as the truck was moved.
Contractors on the scene did a quick repair on the damaged corner of the house. The residents were allowed to remain inside the home.
The Department of Public Works plowed and applied sand to Wilson Street to fight the icy conditions.
