DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury's longtime Republican Mayor Mark Boughton jokingly questioned whether the city should secede from Connecticut in response to the potential loss of $2.5 million in sales tax revenue proposed under Gov. Dannel Malloy's latest budget, according to the Connecticut Post.
The former gubernatorial candidate took to Twitter and Facebook Tuesday, asking "Should #Danbury secede from CT? Give back state aid and form our own state. What should we call it? Should we allow Bethel in?"
On Wednesday, Boughton clarified his jest, telling the Post the joke was made in response to Malloy's latest budget proposal and the state's apparent direction under Democratic control.
A spokesman for Malloy's office called Boughton's reaction, "a shame" and called the Danbury mayor a "tax-raising Republican," according to the Post.
