Danbury's Candlewood Lake Gets Grant For More Carp To Fight Milfoil

DANBURY, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Candlewood Lake Authority, which serves the towns of Brookfield, Danbury, New Milford, New Fairfield and Sherman.

The Candlewood Lake Authority was awarded a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) grant totalling $50,000 to combat Eurasian water milfoil weeds.

The grant is earmarked to help stock the authority's supply of triploid grass carp, which should eradicate unwanted Eurasian water milfoil weeds in Candlewood Lake, the largest lake in Connecticut.

The weeds are easy to transport in water, and can grow on the lake floor, making it difficult to enjoy regular activities like swimming and boating.

State Rep. David Scribner (R-Danbury), member of the Public Health and Finance, Revenue & Bonding Committees, applauded the decision.

“I’m happy that the Lake Authority is finally getting the funding it deserves to destroy and remove invasive weeds,” said Scribner. “Knowing that control is being taken over these disruptive plants and that all admirers of the Lake will benefit from this project is very encouraging.”
