“Financial issues recently reported by the media have not been proven to be a factor for our family members’ disappearance,” the family of Jeanette and Jeffrey Navin said in a statement Thursday. “Information from the authorities indicates that there are available funds still in their bank accounts that are untouched.”
Easton Police Chief Timothy Shaw said in an email to the media that the family did not wish to speak directly with reporters about their missing relatives. Jeanette Navin, 55, and her husband, Jeffrey Navin, 56, haven't been seen or heard from since Aug. 4.
The family also asked for privacy.
“We, the entire Navin family, ask for privacy and respect during this overwhelming and troubling time,” the family said.
Jeffrey Navin is president of J&J Refuse in Westport, which started operations in 1985 with one man and a truck, according to the company's website.
“Due to a family emergency, some collections have been delayed. ... We are working to get back on schedule,” a message on the company’s phone said. The website says it is the No. 1 refuse and recycling collection company in Westport.
A representative from Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe said his office has not received any complaints regarding Navin’s trash-hauling services despite the message.
“There were no complaints to this office regarding J&J Refuse,” she told the Daily Voice in a voicemail Thursday.
A man who answered the phone at Westport's Public Works Department also said he has not received any complaints about the service.
An older Dodge pickup truck belonging to the couple was found Sunday in Westport in a commuter parking lot off the Merritt Parkway, police said. But Westport police referred all questions regarding the couples' disappearance and the truck to the Easton police department.
The Navins, who recently moved from Weston to Easton, grew up in Westport and attended local schools, according to the J&J website.
Jeanette Navin is a school library aide at Weston Intermediate School.
Shaw said nothing was amiss in the couple's Easton apartment. The pickup truck had a smashed window, but police are not sure whether that is connected to the couple's disappearance.
He said police are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
