DANBURY, Conn. — The former owner of a Danbury pet store is facing additional charges of performing an illegal medical procedure on a sick puppy, a procedure described as "torture" in the arrest warrant, according to the News-Times.

According to an arrest warrant, Richard Doyle, 56, of Mahopac, N.Y., “maliciously and intentionally tortured and caused wounds” to a St. Bernard puppy while attempting to drain a cyst, the News-Times said.

Doyle was charged Thursday with animal cruelty and with practice of veterinarian medicine without a license, the News-Times said. He has since sold the Animal Breeders store in Danbury, but still owns a pet store in Mohegan Lake, N.Y., the story said.

This is the third time Doyle has been arrested since July.

In December, Doyle was charged with two counts of tampering with a witness . Police said the warrant stems from an investigation by Danbury police detectives who were assigned to assist state Animal Control with an investigation they were conducting.

Doyle was first arrested in July and charged with three counts of animal cruelty. According to an investigation conducted by state animal control officers with the Department of Agriculture, Doyle performed a surgical procedure on the eye of a Neapolitan Mastiff, which he was not authorized to do. He also confined a critically ill kitten and did not provide it veterinary care, according to police. Police said he also did not provide care for a sick Shih-Tzu puppy. Both the kitten and the puppy were euthanized.
