DANBURY, Conn. — Michael DeAngelo, a freshman student and baseball player at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, was killed in a car crash early Wednesday on I-95 in Old Lyme, according to WCSU and the state police.
The Colonials and Head Coach Johnny Susi will honor DeAngelo at a game this week.
DeAngelo, a native of East Haven, was a standout first baseman for the Yellow Jackets. He was a three-sport captain, an All-SCC selection and recipient of the Levi Jackson Award while at East Haven High School.
At Western, he most recently registered the game-winning RBI single in the Colonials' 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Purchase College on April 13.
According to State Police, DeAngelo lost control of his Lexus on northbound I-95 and crashed into a sound barrier just before 1 a.m. near Exit 70.
No one else was in the car, and no other vehicles were involved, State Police said.
State Police were continuing to investigate the cause of the fatal crash.
