GREENWICH, Conn. — Greenwich school officials offered condolences as they identified a 17-year-old boy who was hit by a train over the weekend as a junior at Greenwich High School.

“We were saddened to learn yesterday of the untimely death of one of our Greenwich High School students from the Class of 2018, a current junior," said Superintendent of Schools Sal Corda said. "Headmaster Chris Winters convened the GHS crisis team at the high school on Sunday to coordinate support for the family, and our students and staff."

Staff and students were notified on Sunday.

"We are all grieving this tragic loss and our hearts go out to the student’s family and friends," Winters said. "Our mental health staff will be available all day today to assist any student or family that may need support."

This is a busy week at Greenwich High School, with final exams and graduation scheduled for Tuesday, June 20.

"Students were also advised that if they feel unable to take a final exam to meet with his/her guidance counselor to discuss options," he said. "Decisions about deferring final exams will be handled on a case-by-case basis."

The name of the student was not released, and no other details were released.
