Huge Condo Fire, Shooting Range Arrest Top The Week's News In Danbury

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Here's a look at the top stories in Fairfield County in the past week:

More than 100 people were left homeless after a massive fire destroyed an apartment-condo complex in Bridgeport on New Year's Eve. Most of the residents fled with only the clothes on their backs. 

Fairfield University faculty and staff were saddened by the deaths of Gisela Gil Egui, 48, an associate professor of communication, and her husband, Jose Martin Labrador, 52, in a wrong-way car crash on I-95 in Miami. The Bridgeport couple were killed with her mother and brother. Labrador was acting director of education technology at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport.

The community at Fairfield Prep also mourned the death of Joseph Kulaga, 14, a freshman who died in a one-car rollover accident in Virginia.

Anthony Josiah Rosa, son of Julia Serrano and Jesse Rosa of Stratford, was the first baby of 2016 born in Fairfield County, arriving at Bridgeport Hospital at 1:20 a.m. More New Year's babies continued to arrive in the early hours at hospitals in Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury.

Swimmers braved the cold on New Year's Day to help charities by taking polar plunges into Long Island Sound from beaches in Greenwich, Westport and Fairfield.

In Brookfield, runners celebrated the New Year by racing in the ninth annual Lions Run for Sight 4-mile race, including a few first-time runners.

People of all ages rang in the New Year as Westport and Weston held their 22nd annual First Night celebration with carriage rides, musical performances, stargazing and fireworks. 

At the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, the seals celebrated the New Year about 12 hours early, with a ball drop of their own.

The body of Suzanne Stisser, 63, a retired Darien teacher, was found in a remote part of town a day after she was reported missing. No signs of foul play were found, but police were investigating.
