Extensive delays are expected as eastbound I-84 is closed to traffic beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, through the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 20.
Traffic will be detoured onto Route 6 at Exit 20 in New York and diverted back onto I-84 at Exit 1 in Danbury.
During the closure, the existing bridge carrying I-84 eastbound over Dingle Ridge Road in Southeast, will be demolished. A new bridge, which was built next to the existing structure on railroad tracks, will be slid into place as part of a $10.2 million bridge replacement project.
Dingle Ridge Road under I-84 will close Friday and will remain closed through Tuesday evening during the work.
Traffic impacts along the Route 6 detour and along Interstate 684 are expected to be significant. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
"In anticipation of extensive road work taking place on Interstate 84, which will lead to complete road closures, we ask that motorists take the following closures, detours and traffic delays into consideration when traveling in the area," a DOT press release said. "As a result, traffic backup will could affect the area, many motorists will be seeking alternative short cut routes through the city of Danbury severely impacting traffic within the city for about 24 hours."
