Malloy Orders Flags Flown Half-Staff To Honor Tenn. Shooting Victims

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has directed the U.S. and State of Connecticut flags  be flown at half-staff to honor four U.S> Marines and a U.S. Navy officer slain in a shooting in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Marines Carson Holmquist of Grantburg, Wis.; Thomas Sullivan of Springfield, Mass.; Skip Wells of Marietta, Ga.; and David Wyatt of Hixson, Tenn., were killed on July 16 when Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez opened fire on a military recruiting center and a Navy training reserve center in Tennessee’s fourth-largest city.

Navy Petty Officer Second Class Randall Smith died from his wounds on July 18 at a Tennessee hospital.

“Connecticut and the nation stands with the people of Tennessee and the many communities that have been devastated by this tragedy,” said Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman in a joint statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims as they are laid to rest -- and with the states across the nation who are mourning the loss of their citizens.”

Flags will remain at half-staff through sunset on July 21.
