Report Shows More Than 7,000 Metro-North Defects Over Last Decade

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, N.Y. -- A recent Freedom of Information request by Hearst Media into Metro-North revealed the commuter railroad found more than 7,100 defects over the last decade, according to the newstimes.com.

The problems reported within Metro-North ranged from track inspections, drug and alcohol policies locomotives and engineer certifications, newstimes.com reported.

A train derailment along the New Haven Line last may and the death of a railroad worker within the same month prompted regulators to launch a more in depth investigation into Metro-North, newstimes.com said.

Metro-North's problems weren't over, however. The commuter rail suffered a number of other mishaps, including a second derailment that killed four people in the Bronx, and a power outage that left the New Haven Line crippled for days.

Federal investigators recently completed "Operation Deep Dive," which was a 60-day inspection into Metro-North, that revealed a culture where time performance was made a higher priority than safety, according to newstimes.com.
