The worst of the blizzard will hit eastern New England from Boston to the Connecticut-Rhode Island border, and over on Cape Cod, said Gary Lessor, assistant to the director of meteorological studies and the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.

The heaviest-hit areas will receive 3 to 4 feet of snow, while most of the Fairfield County area is expected to receive only 20 to 28 inches, Lessor said. Some areas may receive up to 30 inches, and there will be less snow in Westchester County, N.Y. Winds are expected to be between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph.

“The heaviest will be between midnight tonight and noon tomorrow, with still more snow tomorrow afternoon and some snow showers tomorrow night,” Lessor said.

The area might see an inch or two of snow Thursday night, and more next Sunday, he said. But the blizzard will be the big event this week.

“The biggest concern following this blizzard is that it will be extremely cold for a period of time,” Lessor said. The month of February is expected to have temperatures an average of 10 degrees colder than normal, which Lessor said is “extremely significant.”

“There will be days where it is 20 to 25 degrees colder than the normal for this time of the year,” he said. The normal temperature for Bridgeport in February is usually between 23 and 37 degrees.

But the extreme cold may not bring too much snow with it, Lessor said.

“No matter how you count it, the winter of 2014-15 is going to be memorable, for this blizzard and then for the extreme cold,” he said.
