On Oct. 13, King was dispatched to a motorcycle wreck on I-84 eastbound, east of Exit 6. He found a downed motorcycle and the rider lying on the highway's right shoulder. Sansoucy was on the scene, applying pressure to the rider’s right leg to slow the heavy bleeding. King retrieved a combat tourniquet for the injured leg.
The tourniquet slowed the bleeding, but the rider’s pulse began fading. King and Sansoucy continued applying pressure until EMS personnel arrived to transport the injured rider to Danbury Hospital.
The Danbury Director of Emergency Medical Services contacted the commanding officer of Troop A and praised the actions of King and Sansoucy.
Keeping pressure on the rider's wounded leg and quickly applying the tourniquet reduced blood loss and likely saved the rider’s life, the director said.
King, a Bethel resident assigned to the Southbury barracks, earned a Medal for Lifesaving, presented to those who save a human life or make a valiant attempt to save a life.
Sansoucy, a passerby from Woodstock, Conn., earned a Commissioner’s Recognition Award, presented by the agency commissioner to a person instrumental in helping the State Police accomplish their job of public safety for all. This is generally presented to civilians.
The awards were presented in a ceremony earlier this month at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
Twice a year, the Connecticut State Police honor troopers who demonstrate exceptional service in the line of duty as well as other first responders, law enforcement officials and civilians.
Award winners receive medals and certificates from Commissioner Dora B. Schriro and State Police Col. Brian Meraviglia.
