NORWALK, Conn. – After a shopper from the Stew Leonard’s store in Danbury returned a package of imitation crab meat after reportedly finding shards of metal in it, the dairy store immediately recalled the item.

The return was made Sunday, Aug. 6, and  Stew Leonard’s immediately pulled all of the imitation crab meat from the shelves, the store said in a press release.

The store also checked the packages for metal as well as for any other foreign objects, Stew's said. "Nothing was found and this appears to be an isolated incident," the store said.

"Stew Leonard’s is working with the outside supplier that provides the imitation crab meat to determine how the product was contaminated as all of their product goes through a detailed inspection process," Stew's said. The supplier additionally inspected 60 cases of imitation crab meat from the same lot, and nothing was found.

"The health and safety of our shoppers remains our top priority," Stew's said.

Any customer who purchased imitation crab meat or Stew Leonard’s seafood salad with a sell by date of Aug. 12 from Stew Leonard’s may return the product for a full refund.
