Strong Winds In Danbury Increase Threat Of Brush Fires, Power Outages

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Fairfield County escaped the snow from the nor’easter that is now slamming Cape Cod, but a Wind Advisory is in effect throughout the day Wednesday and there is also an enhanced risk of fires and power outages as a result.

“The combination of northwesterly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, relative humidity levels dropping between 20 (percent) and 30 percent and dry fine fuels will result in conditions favorable for the spread of brush fires,” the National Weather Service said in a Special Weather Statement issued Wednesday morning.

“Residents should keep vehicles out of grassy areas and ensure proper disposal of any smoking materials. It only takes a carelessly disposed cigarette to ignite a fire.”

The Wind Advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

It will be mostly cloudy during the morning Wednesday, becoming sunny in the afternoon,with high temperatures reaching just 35 to 37 degrees, but because of the wind-chill factor, it will feel more like 10 to 20 degrees outside.

After a cold overnight with lows in the mid teens, Thursday will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 40s.
