Study: Fairfield County Air Slightly Better This Year

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Air quality in Fairfield County might be getting better, but according to a "State of the Air" report card from the American Lung Association, it still received a C grade.

The rating is based on particle pollution, like the exhaust from a car. When it came to the ozone pollution, Fairfield County received an F grade. Even though most of Connecticut failed the ozone testing, Fairfield County scored more than two times lower than any other county in the state.

Since 1996, however, the number of high ozone days per year has dropped 22.6 days and there were annually 2.6 fewer days with high particle pollution since 2000.

Fairfield County was counted in the New York-Newark-Bridgeport area, which came in at No. 17 for the number of high ozone days.

The study was compiled from information gathered between 2009 and 2011 and is the 14th annual State of the Air report card compiled by the American Lung Association with information from the EPA.
