“It’s another way to keep our soldiers in mind,” said Dan Hayes, director of the Danbury War Memorial. “It will make people think about the people who served in the military.”
All veterans who have served honorably, or are currently on active duty or in a veterans organization, are eligible to be honored on the walkway, Hayes said. Proceeds from the brick sales will directly benefit the Danbury War Memorial, as well as the Wounded Warrior Project, which serves veterans who suffered service-related wounds, injuries or illnesses after Sept. 11, 2001.
The fundraiser will help the organization through a recent financial rough patch, Hayes said. It is different from previous events, such as charity golf tournaments, in that it is solely focused on veterans, he said.
"What better way to honor America's veterans and to preserve the memory of a loved one who served bravely for our country," Lee Teicholz, who spearheaded the fundraising project, said in a statement.
The public has already shown significant interest in purchasing the bricks, with many people visiting his office to see sample designs, Hayes said. The walkway will feature as many as 2,000 bricks and will be completed in three phases. Hayes said he hopes to find volunteers to install the bricks to ensure all funds can be put to use at the organization.
