WILTON, Conn. — Officials have determined that a fellow Wilton student left a sticky note saying "Jews will burn" on a locker at Middlebrook School last week, according to The Hour.

The identity of the student, who is a minor, was not released as school officials determine an appropriate punishment, Wilton Superintendent Kevin Smith said in a letter to parents.

In an earlier message to parents, Smith said that any student involved would be prosecuted, suspended and expelled.

The note, which was left on a sixth-grader's locker, was the third incident of hate speech at the school in October. Two previous incidents — on Oct. 5 and Oct. 20 — involved Nazi swastikas found written in the boys’ bathroom, school officials said.

Smith and First Selectman Lynne Vanderslice will hold a meeting with clergy and town officials Nov. 13 to plan a community response, The Hour said.

The day the sticky note was found, Smith and Middlebrook Principal Lauren Feltz addressed the entire student body, speaking "to them about the incredibly destructive power of hate speech," Smith said. "Students were informed of the consequences of such actions and called again to serve as stewards for inclusivity, kindness, and community."

Smith said he was "distraught by these instances of hate."

The parent of the student involved in the first swastika incident has come forward. The second incident remains under investigation.

Teachers at Middlebrook have delivered lessons from the Anti-Defamation League since the first incident, Smith said.

Principals at Wilton’s schools have been told develop a “response plan” to the incidents, The Hour said.
