FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The blizzard headed for Cape Cod isn't expected to bring much snow to Connecticut , but it will cause strong winds across the entire tri-state area on Wednesday, the National Weather Service warned.

A wind advisory has been placed in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday for all of Connecticut, the Hudson River Valley and northern New Jersey as well as Long Island. The advisory was issued late Tuesday afternoon as stronger winds hit the local forecast.

Strong, gusty northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are forecast, with gusts of up to 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected during the daytime.

Isolated power outages are possible if weak trees, branches and poles are blown down by the strong winds.

The strong winds will also make travel difficult, especially for larger vehicles. Drivers are urged to take caution.

A wind advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph or gusts of 46 to 57 mph are expected or occurring, the National Weather Service said.

A Gale Warning and Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for the waters of Long Island Sound.

There is a blizzard warning in place for Cape Cod, where heavy snow is forecast for Wednesday.
